BACK ON SONG: Donny Osmond set for Manchester
DONNY Osmond will play Manchester this year - more than 30 years since he first charmed female hearts as a teeny bop hero.
Donny was the youngest of the quintet of brothers and a sister that were The Osmonds.
Osmondmania was a phenomenon and the family was chased everywhere by hordes of adoring fans, but unlike some stars who took advantage of this, their strict Mormon faith prevented The Osmonds from doing so.
Donny then became a solo act and had a run of hits such as Young Love and Puppy Love. Once the hits dried up though, he found that his clean-cut image became a liability, as he himself said: “Not only could I not get arrested, I was downright radioactive.”
His strong faith and support of his family kept him going through the darker days but his career blossomed again after he was cast as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. He starred in the stage show for years and, suddenly, it was cool to like Donny Osmond.
His tours have been sell-outs as the fans from 30 years ago have remained loyal. In 2003 his tour paid homage to his brothers in the form of filmed extracts from his past. Another sell-out tour in 2005, including a show at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium, proved that Donny - the grown up Donny — was still much in demand.
He has continued to record and has recently released what some consider to be his finest record. Love Songs of the 70s is a tribute to some of the best romantic songs of that decade, including Mandy, How Deep Is Your Love and I Can See Clearly Now.
Donny Osmond plays the MEN Arena on Friday, October 26. Tickets are priced at 32 and are available on 0870 190 8000 or from 0870 400 0688 and www.LiveNation.co.uk
