WHILE contestants struggle to sing in tune on The X Factor, one man thinks the ability to hold a note is far from important when it comes to becoming a star.Nigel Martin-Smith may be controversial in his views, but he knows how to form a successful band - he created Take That.

He says: “These days it’s all about ‘can you sing a couple of bars in tune?’, but what’s that got to do with finding the next big thing?

“Most people can sing to some degree and there’s this button they have in studios these days called auto tune.

The most important thing is that they’ve got star quality.”

He makes his comments on The Truth About Boy Bands (ITV1, Saturday), screened, appropriately enough, after the launch of the new series of The X Factor.

This documentary features singers (Shane Lynch from Boyzone, Antony Costa from Blue, Donny Osmond and Jermaine Jackson) managers (Louis Walsh, Tom Watkins) and producers (Pete Waterman) spilling the beans.

The history of boy bands is explored, from The Monkees in the 1960s through The Jacksons, the Osmonds and New Kids On The Block to Take That, East 17, NSync, Five, Boyzone, Westlife and McFly.
